Magically, I now have Ms Pauker’s first book in my hands after all. Okay, only on my tablet, but that’s also “in my hands”, so to speak. In any case, the question arose as to whether it wouldn’t make more sense to work on this book first. And well, what can I say. I can imagine that things are explained in it that completely confused me in her third or fourth book, at least I hope that’s the case. Today I discovered that the woman who wrote the book I am working on is in a collection of samples that I still have on my shelf. However, the patterns from my book are not included here. How productive was this woman? And what does she mean by “knitting a smooth course over it”. There seems to have been a secret knitting language around 1830. Are there actually archives in Germany or Austria that only deal with this? I hope the internet knows something like that. So many questions and so much internet, it will challenge the recall and precision of my search engine. In any case, the best results come up with “Gang sricken”. Or are there no knitting gangs on the streets of New York?
