Getting very emotional about IT

Part 1

I’m going to split this article up because otherwise it’s probably so long that nobody would read it in its entirety. I’ll start with a look back at my school days

(all names have been changed)

A lot has happened in the last few days, including a 5 centimetre laceration on the back of my head. Apparently I thought my feet were wood-magnetic and would somehow attract the chair that wasn’t under my feet, so I can just climb off a loft bed without… well.

I was involved in a few conversations, visited two different hackspaces and once again came to the conclusion “I should do something with computer science”.
Since I’m a little angst-ridden GDR child, I have something like permanent existential angst. If I don’t have my planned “rescue amount” in my account in a month, I often think directly of homelessness and debt trap. And that’s not so far-fetched when I look at my first steps towards independence. I never want to experience that again.

My first idea when I think of financial security and a relatively okay job is “something to do with IT”.
So I often say “I should do something with IT, then I’ll have enough money to put aside so I can do what I really want to do.”

This is probably the first sticking point.

In my opinion, I belong to a generation in which IT was not necessarily part of school education. Sometime in the first school, between 7 and 12 years old, I remember donated computers in a room where we could learn things with MS-Dos during a project week. I am learning – I think – to create batch files.

Later in a higher class, yes, there was the “Informatik AG”, Thomas was in this AG and Thomas “liked me”. We had Turbo Pascal there and nobody really picked me up from where I was. The final task was: “Build a figure that is filled in with colour, an object that has different colours and a movement. So paint a picture”.

My picture: An unfilled stick figure with an incredibly huge head, two very big googly eyes and a stick arm that alternately flashed white and red. It was standing in front of a house with a chimney from which a “smoke line” was coming out, flashing grey and white.

Thomas picture: two figures standing on a beach volleyball court (beach) and playing volleyball together, the ball kept flying back and forth over the net and the figures took turns touching the ball. In the background was water which was also moving and colourful dots represented the audience.

I think I realised at that moment that something was going wrong. I was sick a lot at school, I always missed a lot of schoolwork – I could actually think “yay – still managed to do something” but it was more like “shit I can’t keep up”.

When I left school, I briefly started as an “IT clerk” or rather “foreign language secretary”, but I had even fewer foreign languages at school than IT – so after 2 months I switched to IT training. It was all about “Visual Basic”. But at least that was something where I could try it out and see what I had actually just created. However, it was a private school course and in reality far too expensive for my mum to pay for in the long term. So that was my first time dropping out of school. This was followed by others, but I just couldn’t go any further in this direction.

My relationship to computers after dropping out: I was 16 and got a fucked-up PC from someone. I connected a 56 kbps modem on my own. Connected to the phone line, it produced an incredible bill. I was forced out of necessity to get films, music and pictures from the WWW, because where else would I get them? What I’m trying to say is that I was apparently able to help myself out of curiosity and with an inner drive. I found out how to get the things I wanted undetected and very slowly. So in retrospect, I would say the approach was right, but why didn’t it continue with a stellar career as a superhacker?

Such a bicycle can mean freedom <3

I have had my bike back since Saturday afternoon. I had it repaired, finally. I have a “hybrid bike” – you can ride it around town, but you can also go on longer tours. You can even ride over gravel! I bought it used here and it’s quite ok. I’m used to a bike that only has 3 gears, this one has infinitely more. It has a basket and I put it between an annoying e-bike and a bike that is so clean that it is obviously never used, in the bike room of our apartment block.

Now I have ridden it 4 times since yesterday. It’s the weekend, so the streets are quieter than usual. I ride in Vienna and you would think that if I can stand Berlin and ride there, then Vienna shouldn’t be a problem.
However, I have the impression, especially as a pedestrian, that there is less honking when there is a “conflict”, but that you simply get run over. In Berlin, people honk and shout at you, but rarely run you over directly.

Now here there are bicycle lanes that are used in two directions at the same time. Cycle lanes for which you have to cross a junction although you actually want to go straight ahead. There are simply no paths or only a bus lane. There are paths, but they are parked up. There are good or at least exciting paths on the ring road, but there are so many people running around on them that it is very likely that you will crash into them. Well – there are also e-scooter riders. They overtake you with pimped-out scooters. Two on one scooter. Drunk on a scooter in twos or singles. They cut you off, they get in the way, whether with someone on them or alone. Sometimes these scooters seem more dangerous than cars. At least when I’m on the road they see me. When I ride on a path that is actually on the pavement, the cars see me less or not at all. On the other hand, pedestrians and scooters and vendors riding scooters don’t see me either. Thank you.

As much as I would like to get upset about all the others who drive even crappier than I do. Because I definitely have a problem with right of way rules. My bike licence was 30 years ago, too. I don’t have a driving licence.
As much as I want to get upset, I recognise the following:
I’m finally more independent again. I no longer have to take the crappy underground when I’m on my own. I can still be in my hackspace in the evening without someone having to take me to the bus or home. I am clearly more independent again. I have the feeling that I have regained a bit of self-determination and freedom.
The possibility to move independently – I have the impression that I can cycle away from my PTSD/anxiety disorders. <3
The thought of riding around in the evening, maybe with a friend, exploring the city, being able to get to remote places, “experiencing” the area on the bike and thus being flexible about travel times and the like, that’s a very nice thought.

I hope I can make it happen and I hope others might too, who have problems with standing with lots of people in a small space in a shitty metro where they don’t want to touch, hear or see anything.

I’m thinking about cycling to work, but the fact that it’s like I’ve had a shower when I get off makes me think a bit more about whether I’ll do it. There is still the fear of those shitty drivers. Once I get over that, or at least feel safer, there should be nothing stopping me.

Time to oil up properly

Lately, I have not been very busy with knitting, crocheting or other handicrafts, which I do excessively at times.
Through a project for CCCamp23, I painted backgrounds for a puppet theatre. In the end, I just had to think the sentence that I hate acrylic and my surroundings knew.

The third one I painted completely in fluorescent colours. Here is a gif:

Gif : You can see a gif that shows the process of creating a psychedelic background. First, colourful spirals and circles are slowly created, finally black doodle-like lines are made on the image, two spiral-like balls in the middle remain free.

Anyway, it made me look more into wedge frames and the covering of the same. At least that’s what Jens did for me 😀 But the motivation was there. So on Wednesday I bought wedge frames and cotton fabric and off I went. The super arrogant salesman got me to buy some rabbit glue to prime the fabric with by saying things like “yes, laymen would do it like this”. When I got home, after a short search, I realised that it’s better used for wooden panels and frames. Thank you.
Well. The preparation somehow involves soaking the stuff for an hour, then cooking it at a certain temperature and putting it in the fridge. Hm no. So I took my layman’s primer (Greso) and slapped that on the canvas. Let’s see if that works. I’ve been wanting to paint with oil again for a long time. I come more from the watercolour corner. Let’s put it this way. So far I haven’t found a painting medium that really convinces me and my abilities. Apparently I want to use everything the way it suits me and not the medium. So there is sometimes something like a conflict.

So I bought a new set “Norma” from Schmincke and that will surely solve all my problems I ever had with oil paints. Hm yes. I also bought some painting products that sounded entertaining to me. One of them is “Medium 5 Painting Butter” – what could go wrong with that?

I’ll try to be super patient with the painting this time. I have chosen a motif that was created in Prague. Two people lying in front of each other, but you can only see one eye and hair. A lot of hair. It’s a super close-up, so to speak. I think I will post process pictures to keep my 2 readers up to date.

I hope I won’t be saying I hate oil paint in a week.

Brief notes on a stay in Warsaw

I have been on the road a lot in the last few weeks. We were in Warsaw, among other places, and then in Krakow. I had a completely different idea of Warsaw beforehand. What I hadn’t realised in any case was that an incredible amount had been destroyed. So there was a lot of new construction. So it’s a small metropolis of new buildings in the middle of old buildings from the time when I was born. I hoped for a feeling of being “at home” in a foreign place. Simply because I spent a short part of my life growing up in a real socialist state that was dependent on the Soviet Union. Just like other Eastern Bloc countries at that time.

I come from East Berlin. My memories fluctuate between buildings from that time and old buildings that were largely in a very poor condition. Many buildings have this grey, dirty plaster that makes everything look the same. A Soviet uniformity.
You can’t choose where you come from, and the first years certainly shape you more than you would like. So, living in a neighbouring country where there was no Soviet construction and no uniformity, I am looking for a piece of home. So I travel to the neighbouring Eastern Bloc countries and look for my aesthetic “home”. Sometimes I am disappointed, as in small places near the Austrian border, where little has happened.
So I hoped for the full charge from Warsaw. The Palace of Culture was quite an impressive building. I had to think a little of brutalist buildings. Here is the article on Wikipedia about this palace: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Palace_of_Culture_and_Science . The palace itself is not a brutalist building.
At some point I want to see most of these buildings here: https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Liste_von_Bauwerken_des_Brutalismus I’m using the German link here because the English one has no pictures.

A highlight was indeed the Warsaw Hackerspace. https://youtu.be/mMrfKu_ObVM here is an older video of them. However, they have confused Stallman with Wau Holland or this is just some troll stuff. When we were there, it was much more orderly and not so crowded, they really put a lot of work into it. One of my highlights on site was an old telephone with which you could call the Pope (John Paul the 2nd), who would then say some random shit 🙂 Unfortunately, it wasn’t working at the time. We were also on the roof, where my companion almost had a heart attack because I was standing too close to the edge. Hm.
Anyway, there were John Paul 2 memes and scultures everywhere, so it was all troll stuff, very likeable. There was only one person on site who had opened the door especially for us. Here’s another thank you to you, gadzer.
Here are a few photographic impressions from the Hackspace:

We also visited the pinball museum. Unfortunately, many machines were out of order. In addition, such a gambling den is usually very loud and stuffy, but we still spent 3 hours playing pinball ad nauseam. <3
Four of us played and I even won 1…2 times. Well, purely in terms of graphics, a pinball machine from the 80s is a real highlight.
Our accommodation was in the old town. We probably should have had a flat in the city centre – the “new city centre” – for the real untouristy feeling. So we were surrounded by Pirogi and Lody. And churches, of course. A colleague of mine said “the restaurant next to the church was great”. Hm yes.
Remarkable were inventive names for kebab shops that sounded even more entertaining in Polish. In general, many words that sound or read cute because they end in the letter “i” or “y”.

All in all, it was strange there. It was so new and familiar at the same time. I missed some of the buildings I know from Bratislava. Maybe I wasn’t exactly looking for them. Maybe I’ll report back later with a short report from Krakow, because that’s where we were afterwards. And it was pretty much completely different.

you can see street art here. A person holding up a sign that says: in tinder we trust. 2nd row: we are lost

Who is afraid of road movies? Something similar to a film review? well, not really.

I wasn’t feeling so well a few days ago, I had quite a wanderlust and just wanted to get away. So I sat down and tried to depict it somehow, and somehow only this one film came to mind. So I tried to put the two main characters on the page. I thought of the film poster and a scene on the train. However, it didn’t work out well, just off the top of my head, and I was quite dissatisfied. I don’t have an A3 scanner either and the thing that bothers me the most is that Ljoha actually has something like a buzzcut on and to me it looks like something out of a 50s cigarette commercial. So I’ll just post the idea – a clip and write this text here:

Plagued by wanderlust, I am incredibly receptive to such films. But not the ones where a few white men in their late 30s and early 40s drive through the desert and take a lot of drugs.

But rather the ones that aim for a very down-to-earth mood. Something you can compare yourself to and maybe think, “Yeah, I know that one”.
A film that is very relatable for me is Compartment No. 6.
In some articles they say it’s a drama, in others it’s a dramatic road movie. I wonder where the drama is here. In German, the word drama has a very different connotation than in English.

The timing of the film’s release was difficult. It premiered at the Cannes Film Festival in July 2021, but was only released in German-speaking cinemas in March 2022. Conceivably unfavourable for a film that takes place half in Russian, where this giant dick Putin is about to destroy an entire country.

The countries of production are Finland, Estonia, Germany and Russia. The languages of the film are Finnish and Russian.
I can only recommend watching this film in its original language. I briefly heard the German sync in a trailer and in my opinion it just sucks.
The female lead is played by Seidi Haarla (Laura in the film), she is just adorable. The male lead is played by Yuri Borisov, I don’t know that much about him, who knows many important or real things about actresses? After all, they are only human. But what I can say is that the few Russians I know are incredibly similar to this Yuri – Ljoha in the film.

The film takes place in the years when the Soviet Union is disintegrating, I existed at that time too, but I was much younger than Laura in the film. But that’s a point of reference for me. Well, Laura comes to Moscow and hangs out in this flat-sharing community where there are always these really cool intellectual parties and stuff. She’s quite in love with Irina, or at least that’s what she thinks. Laura is studying archaeology in Finland and she actually wants to go with Irina to see these petroglyphs in Kanosero. They are ancient rock paintings. But nope – that’s not going to happen. I don’t want to spoil too much, that’s not really the point.
Laura goes off on her own to this remote area, because rock paintings are somehow always in such remote areas.
She then travels on a train that is super crammed with people, but she has a compartment – with the “disadvantage”? that she has to share it with Ljoha. Such a cliché to the power of 10.
It’s all a mixture of various unpleasant but understandable situations – along the lines of – it could happen to you at some point in your life.
She wants to change her job in St. Petersburg, but Irina somehow doesn’t get it on the phone.
So she continues on her way. It is not possible to change compartments, so she is stuck with Ljoha again. Slowly they become friends in a strange way.

And from then on I go along. From here on, my heart is somehow in it. And that’s not a romance or anything. Actually, it’s all pretty unlikely and hopeless from the start. Ljoha is on his way to work, he is a mountain farmer and Laura is a student who wants to see something he has never heard of before. He’s a pretty simple guy and she seems to be checking out what she wants first during the whole journey. Both of them go through a development while they sleep away the morning drunk on a Russian granny’s bench or steal cars.

There is also this moment when a Finn gets on board and Laura then trusts the compatriot almost immediately. That backfires, proving once again that this is nonsense.

When they arrive at the train’s destination, they go their separate ways. Then Laura also learns that she can’t visit these rock paintings in winter. And then it gets romantic – but I won’t say anything about that, just watch the film. Really.

Voyage Voyage by Desireless is played over and over again the whole bloody time. https://youtu.be/NlgmH5q9uNk My goodness, and really loud in the cinema. That was pretty impressive and just good.

I would super love to read the book, unfortunately there’s only the Finnish version on google books or something. The translation is out of print, in English and in German. It’s almost like Chimo’s “says Lila”.

You can see a portrait. It shows Ljoha from compartment no. 6. The right side of the head has a lot of shadow. There are many different colours. It looks a bit like a 50s advertisement, with a wave of hairdryer and a mischievous smile. It is mostly done with watercolours and black ink.

Therapeutic doodles

Lately (by that, I guess I mean the last few weeks), I’ve been hanging out in a hackspace more often. There are often a lot of people there and most of them don’t know me well and I don’t know them either. At some point it gets too much for me – sometimes – and I start to slip into dissociative states. I try to avoid that and expose myself to the flooding or this “the memory is full”. I try to force myself a little bit. One possibility for me is to redirect. Redirecting to something haptic or to music, or to both.
So I’ve been making scribbles again for a few weeks. Sometimes with a plan behind it, sometimes I watch myself drawing or scribbling. Maybe the latter is a bit dissociative, but so what?
Attached are a few doodles, some of them are not finished yet, but I’m not sure if I’ll pursue them further.
I gave one away, maybe I’ll ask if I can post it, it’s not mine anymore.

Why do I “sometimes” just not post anything?

Since a few months, I know that I am “ill”.
Short break here:
Brief digression: I’m not sure if that’s the reason I haven’t posted anything for so long, maybe a little, but it’s certainly not the only reason. I’ve been a bit unhappy with the design and my blog theme for a while. I’d like to broaden the focus a bit more than “just posting creative stuff”. I would also like to write something from the soul, get a bit upset, be political, post something about the daily madness. maybe also write about mental health or illness. I would also like to write when I just think something is really good. Film reviews? About music? About my holiday? I don’t want to create a separate blog for every piece of shit.
So just out of fear of scaring someone off, so one of the 3 readers of my blog…. I guess I shouldn’t post anything else but just throw it out there or not?
Digression end.
Moving on:
My brain does not function “normally”. I am torn between: ignoring that something is there and not ignoring it, but finding a way to use my “disturbances” more consciously to generate something good on it.
As we all know, the meaning of “something good” is not exactly the same for everyone.
So I guess I’ll stick to my own perception.
Before I knew what I had, when I was at the beginning of my 20s, I had quite a difficult phase. I was quite self-destructive, others would say. In retrospect, I can say that no, I wasn’t. Puffing cigarettes, scratching around a bit, taking a drag on a vaporizer and occasionally excessive computer gaming is definitely not a path that leads to suicide.
What I did do, however, while I was puffing and carving away at myself: I painted, I drew, I was constantly busy expressing myself in the form of pictures and photographs. I lost myself in it and others pulled me out of it by telling me that you can’t live like that. I remember many moments when others were always saying that something was not possible this way or that way.
Now I know that I listened to others, acted according to others, because I never seriously learned how to do what I wanted. In part, I probably can’t do it at all. I have something like a gut feeling. If I only acted according to my gut, maybe it could backfire quite a bit? Now there’s this thing about “doing/deciding things with your heart” – well, my emotions are really crass. Nothing here with “a little bit here a little bit there” it’s more like “here, stand in front of this steel beam, I’m going to let go of it now”.
Brain…brain, no, it’s not really good either. When I think of all these chains of thoughts, theories that go round in circles and the never-ending nights that rob me of sleep while I try to convince myself that everything is alright.
Wouldn’t it be great if all these organs worked together? If they all functioned “normally”? Making decisions, building interpersonal relationships, maintaining, nurturing and cherishing interpersonal relationships, organising everyday life, working, loving.
I think that ship has sailed.

But one thing is for sure: I am capable of burning for something. So I will do it. I am creative, so I will use that.

So I have decided that now is the time to start using all my weird brain things to express myself the way I do. To stop constantly thinking about the consequences. Finally learn to act on my own without permanent consideration for other people I hardly know. Consideration for important people in my life and an appreciation for me and for them that we can be part of our lives.
I really don’t feel like just dropping out of this life. It can’t be that that’s all there is.

I will probably modify this blog a bit over time. Of course it’s nice to post all these “creative things”. Since I “suffer” from subtle narcissistic tendencies – I have the desire to be “seen”. So my environment came up with the idea that I should just slap everything into a blog and put it online. However, I don’t necessarily get “seen” that way and in the meantime I have slowly found back to my “fuck you attitude” which keeps me from being unhappy when nobody is seriously interested in my creative shit.

I love you all you fuckers <3

Project title and possible new findings

Magically, I now have Ms Pauker’s first book in my hands after all. Okay, only on my tablet, but that’s also “in my hands”, so to speak. In any case, the question arose as to whether it wouldn’t make more sense to work on this book first. And well, what can I say. I can imagine that things are explained in it that completely confused me in her third or fourth book, at least I hope that’s the case. Then I guess I’ll have to rename the project “Newest pattern book of 103 excellently beautiful knitting pattern tours”. Read you later.

knitting gangs and R-P

Today I discovered that the woman who wrote the book I am working on is in a collection of samples that I still have on my shelf. However, the patterns from my book are not included here. How productive was this woman? And what does she mean by “knitting a smooth course over it”. There seems to have been a secret knitting language around 1830. Are there actually archives in Germany or Austria that only deal with this? I hope the internet knows something like that. So many questions and so much internet, it will challenge the recall and precision of my search engine. In any case, the best results come up with “Gang sricken”. Or are there no knitting gangs on the streets of New York?

This pressure from YouTubers … / News

Wow this “everything I knitted/made/crocheted in 2022” trend …. I should make a video with everything I haven’t knitted or crocheted in the last 4 years. So not finished… so. That would probably be a very long video and I’ll spare you.
Instead, this year will be accompanied by a project that I will write about regularly here on a sub-page. The first post will be published on Saturday morning.

Hello you 2-3 readers out there, don’t be too excited but you can see knitting pattern instructions (from 1835) from then on that you may or may not be able to knit, but you can watch them 😀
